Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood is the traditional flooring choice, each plank in these ranges is a single piece of solid wood, expertly cut to varied lengths and widths, sometimes bevelled and enhanced by a range of finishes. Solid hardwood floors feel firm and substantial underfoot.

They are hardwearing and resilient, can be re-sanded many times and can last well over 100 years. A key characteristic is what Ted Todd refer to as ‘shape’, by which we mean how the wood lays. Solid wood does not sit flat on the floor; it has living form and subtle contours which respond to the environment and create a gentle but noticeable sensation underfoot.

Available in a multitude of widths, grades colours and finishes the possibilities are endless although site conditions may ultimately be the deciding factor in your choice. Accurate moisure readings are absolutely critical to ensure on site conditions are acceptable before a solid floor can be delivered or installed.

An appropriate moisture retarder must be used on both wood and concrete floors, the later being a liquid applied DPM.Planks can be secret nailed or screwed through the tongue on wood subfloors on all boards under 160mm wide, over 160mm wide the subfloor should be plyed and the boards should be glued directly to the subfloor and nailed or screwed as previous.

Planks should be fully adhered to any concrete floors after appropriate preparation, we do not recommend installing solid planks over 160mm wide on concrete subfloors due to potential problems with excessive movement, if a board over 160mm wide is required on a concrete subfloor an Engineered board is far more stable and will give better results. Solid floors should not be laid over underfloor heating systems.
